Mobile Engineer (Flutter) — TuneAfrica Listener App

About the role

TuneAfrica's listener app is the primary product that the majority of users will interact with and you will build it in Flutter. This is a highly polished consumer product that competes with Spotify and Apple Music on user experience — but serves a context those apps ignore. The app must be beautiful, fast, and work well on low-end Android devices with limited memory and storage. The music player is the heart of the app and deserves exceptional engineering: smooth scrubbing through tracks, seamless gapless playback between songs in a queue, lock screen controls and notification media player, audio focus management that pauses when a call comes in, visualiser animations tied to audio amplitude, and queue management with drag-to-reorder. The player must handle network interruptions gracefully, buffering ahead and recovering without interrupting playback. Beyond the player, you will build: the discovery home screen with algorithmically curated sections, trending charts by country and genre, and new releases; the search with acoustic genre filtering and artist/album/playlist search; the social features including group listening sessions using WebSocket-synchronised playback, challenge discovery linked to trending songs, and shared playlists; the offline library management with intelligent prefetch and storage management; and the subscription management and M-Pesa payment flow for premium upgrades. Experience building audio streaming apps, particularly managing audio focus, background playback, and adaptive streaming, is required. Consumer app polish and attention to animation quality is expected.
