Lead Backend Architect (Telco/Fintech)

About the role

Role Overview: Safaricom PLC is looking for a Principal Architect to lead the technical evolution of the M-Pesa ecosystem. You will be responsible for designing the next-generation microservices backbone that powers digital financial services for millions of Kenyans. This is a role for a senior technical leader with a deep understanding of telecommunications and large-scale financial systems. Responsibilities: - Design and oversee the evolution of M-Pesa's microservices architecture. - Set the technical standards and architectural principles for the ecosystem. - Lead the integration strategy for Super Apps and 3rd party mini-programs. - Ensure the highest levels of security, scalability, and performance. - Collaborate with senior leadership on the long-term technical roadmap. - Mentor and guide senior technical staff across various teams. - Represent Safaricom in technical discussions with external partners and regulators. Requirements: - 12+ years of experience in software architecture and technical leadership. - Deep expertise in building high-concurrency, mission-critical financial systems. - Proven experience with telco-grade platforms and GSMA standards. - Expert knowledge of distributed systems, microservices, and cloud-native tech. - Strong leadership and strategic thinking skills. Nice-to-haves: - Experience with high-level fintech integrations at a continental level. - PhD or Masters in Computer Science or a related field. - Previous experience as a CTO or Technical Director in a fintech/telco company.
