About the role

AfriVote's citizen portal must be the most accessible civic technology application in Africa — it serves all Kenyan citizens from university graduates in Nairobi to semi-literate community members in rural Turkana. You will build a Next.js application that meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards, works well on low-bandwidth connections, supports multiple languages (English, Swahili, with extensibility for regional languages), and presents complex civic information in a clear and trustworthy way. Key flows you will build: the citizen identity verification onboarding flow with national ID entry and optional biometric verification; the active consultations discovery page with filtering by county, topic, and deadline; the consultation participation interface that adapts to the consultation type — survey, ranked-choice vote, participatory budgeting, or free-text submission; the citizen's participation history and government response tracking; and the public audit trail explorer that allows any citizen to verify the integrity of consultation results. The government dashboard (a separate Next.js application) allows officials to: create and configure consultations; monitor participation rates in real time with demographic breakdowns; review AI-generated sentiment analysis and thematic clusters from free-text submissions; publish response commitments; and export audit reports for constitutional compliance documentation. Experience with accessible web development, civic technology, or government digital services is highly valued. Experience with multilingual web applications and WCAG compliance is required.
