About the role

AfriHealth is building telemedicine infrastructure for rural East Africa and needs a Fullstack Engineer to build the patient-facing application and core backend APIs. This is a meaningful engineering role with real-world health impact: the software you write will enable sick people in underserved communities to access quality medical care. On the frontend you will build a Next.js PWA that works offline, renders fast on low-end devices, and is accessible to users with limited digital literacy. Key flows include: patient registration with NHIF number verification, appointment booking with real-time doctor availability, the video consultation screen using our WebRTC wrapper, the digital prescription view with pharmacy direction integration, and the patient health record timeline. On the backend you will build FastAPI endpoints for all patient and appointment operations, design the FHIR-compliant health record schema in PostgreSQL, implement the NHIF API integration for coverage verification, and build the notification system (SMS via Africa's Talking, push notifications via FCM). You will work closely with the mobile engineer on shared API contracts and with the UI/UX designer to implement designs that are clinically appropriate — medical UX has specific conventions around readability and error states that are different from consumer apps. Strong candidates have experience with healthcare applications or regulated data environments, understand FHIR data structures, and have worked with real-time communication systems. Experience with Africa's Talking SMS API or similar is valued.
